New To Community Building? Listen To This Podcast

There are a lot of podcasts on the subject of building community.

One that has completely grown on me despite @teamSPI repping a completely different platform to host their community (Circle), is @JillianBenbow’s The Community Experience Podcast.

If you are new to community building, here’s why I would recommend blocking an hour per week (or go for a walk like I do!) to take in every episode:

Reason #1: Diverse Guests

The CEP (I hope that acronym’s a thing because it sounds dope in my head) features builders from all community sizes and subject areas.

Hearing from builders in spaces other than content creators and business coaches has helped get me out of the trap of tropes and willing to try new things in my servers.

Reason #2: There are Coles Notes

Jillian does a nice job summing up each interview at the end of the episode. When you’re already listening on 1.7x speed and getting to that conclusion even earlier that may seem like overkill, but I’ll often get home from my walk and give a wee re-listen of that summary so I can take good notes on my favourite takeaways.

Reason #3: Community is Community

(One of Jillian’s running jokes is testing how many times she can say the word “community” in a pod episode. Girl, hold my beer.)

It doesn’t matter where you host it, the principles of passion, engagement, sharing, growth, potential burnout, monetization, you name it, are universal.

I’ve picked up best practices in every episode and been able to apply them in a Discord environment (because it’s awesome), so don’t feel like you have to be settled on a specific platform first.

As a beginner, I promise — this is one of the most helpful resources on the Internet you can sink your teeth into to learn community building.
